How to choose a car?

Most often, the question of how to choose a car is asked by newcomers who have just received a license. Everyone is guided here, first of all, by personal preferences and, of course, by the sum. In order to select a car according to necessary parameters and price, it is possible to allocate some criteria which will facilitate the task. And you can always get a lot of money for an old car here:

Body Type

Let’s consider the most common types.

An inexperienced driver, who lives in the city, the most suitable is a small car, maneuverable in the flow of cars and not causing difficulties when parking due to its dimensions. If you plan to travel around town and are not going to carry a lot of stuff, a hatchback with its soft suspension and compact body will do.

For travel in the city and beyond, the sedan is recommended, it is longer, but better suited for travel over long distances.

If you are the lucky owner of a large family or plan frequent trips with friends, consider a station wagon.

If your journey is off-road, your choice is an SUV or off-roader. However, be prepared for the fact that with its good cross-country ability you need to keep in mind the high fuel consumption, difficulties with parking and the specifics of driving a large car.

  1. Transmission

In this respect, experts are unanimous: if you will be driving in urban areas, where you have to constantly slow down, stop and start again, it is worth choosing a car with automatic transmission. For driving on country roads, where it is supposed to move for a long time at a given speed, manual transmission is more suitable. It should also be noted that the manual gearbox is considered more reliable and allows for a slightly lower fuel consumption.

Engine displacement

In the city it is better to prefer a small volume, 1-1.6 liters, out of town, where power plays a more important role, 1.8-2.5 liters. Remember, the more power, the more fuel consumption.

  1. Drive

For newcomers, experts recommend choosing a car with front-wheel drive. It is more stable on a slippery road or on a snowy track. Rear-wheel drive is used to increase acceleration speed, it is good on dry surfaces. All-wheel drive provides maximum stability and cross-country ability.

  1. Domestic or foreign car

Domestic cars are attractive, first of all, cost. This applies both to the cost of the car itself, and the cost of its maintenance, spare parts. It is unlikely to be difficult to find a car service or repair master. Among the disadvantages are, of course, comfort and not much reliability.

Foreign cars are distinguished by a huge number of additional options, convenience, comfort and much more safety. But the cost of foreign cars is significantly higher, as well as their operation. It is also possible to have problems with finding the necessary spare parts and a good car service.

How to choose a used car

If for some reason you decide to purchase a used car, very carefully examine the vehicle.

Do not purchase a car older than 10 years. It is believed that such cars can give surprises more often and break down at the most inopportune moment, especially if used improperly. The 5-6 years is the optimum age for your car, when it has not yet had a chance to exhaust its useful life. Try to learn as many details as possible. How many owners, was it in an accident, mileage, storage conditions, what repair was conducted and when, and so on. All of this will help you be prepared for possible future investments.

Avoid cars with too low a mileage. Also, do not buy a used car, which has previously served as a cab, training car or rental car – the risk of wear and tear and unforeseen breakdowns is too high.

When choosing your first car be guided by the rule – the easier, the better. It is better if it will be a small car with front-wheel drive and a standard four-cylinder gasoline engine and automatic transmission.

Be prepared for the investment. A used car requires the new owner to replace technical fluids, plugs, belts, if necessary, brake pads, discs, buy new tires, battery.

Make sure that on your first trips you have everything you need for any emergency at hand: a canister, fire extinguisher, tools, cigarette lighter wire, rope, first aid kit, battery charger, jack, spare tire, warning triangle and so on. All this will not take up much space and allow you to feel much more confident.
